Hi. Of course mom's results posted after hours on a Friday.

It was positive at a "trace" level for leukocytes, protein and hyaline casts whatever that is. Everything I read says these trace levels "may" indicate a UTI but the urine has to be examined under a microscope. Is this the culture that takes a few days?

She has macrobid antibiotic her doc's NP prescribed while awaiting the results but it gives her diahreaa and I don't want her to build a tolerance for antibiotics if she doesn't need to take them.

I'm going to reach out to our new care manager also but thought I would ask.

If you go to any search engine and type in "Leukocytes in Urine" it will tell you all about it. It may be indicative of infection, but without the microscopic exam you will not get specific bacteria and the specific antibiotic the bacteria is responsive to. Afraid you are having to await to check with MD as soon as you are able.

Are you certain mom's diarrhea is due to the macrobid? It is a rather mild general treatment that is usually fairly well tolerated. If you cannot control the diarrhea with some immodium I would wait until you know for certain if there A) IS bacteria and B) what the bacteria is sensitive to. Call any phone advice nurse you can meanwhile to report the diarrhea.
