Doctor is recommending hospice for Mom because of a recent mini-stroke. Just want to keep her in her home until that dreaded day comes. Any suggestions will help.

I'm wondering if there's more going on healthwise than the mini-stroke to justify the recommendation of hospice. If her situation is terminal, and she is a candidate for hospice, there will be staff to attend her and you don't need to arrange for a sitter.

If, however, you bring her home and need someone to be with her while you work, that's a different story. But I'm really confused how a sitter could be needed if your mother goes into hospice (which I hope for your sake isn't the case).

Hospice insisted we have someone with the patient at all times, 24/7. Can you get an FMLA leave and mom can make up your lost pay?

Pam, do you know if someone with a patient at all times is standard in hospice? Was this throughout your family member's stay? I wasn't aware of this requirement. Perhaps my answer was incorrect. My experience was with that of a family member and it was my understand the family was not required to provide 24/7 presence.

The poster has mom in at-home hospice. I had my dad in at-home hospice, they too required a family member be present. I believe a facility based hospice would not have this requirement. At-home hospice only provided 24x7 attendant until the patient was stable and when death was imminent.

Ismiami, that makes perfect sense. I was thinking after reading LuvChris' profile/statement that her mother was being cared for at home, but not on a hospice status.

Thanks for the responses. In-home hospice is correct. Doctor has basically said that Mom's brain is dying in the area of the stroke.She has had two major stokes in the past and some possible mini strokes within the last couple of weeks.
It's a Medicaid/Medicare issue. Hospice home health will come maybe 3 hours, 3 days a week. I'd like for my Mom to be in her own house. FMLA would give the time off, but income will stop. My bills will not.
