Welcome to the bill paying club. A couple of months ago I found myself needing to take over the bill paying for my Dad as my Mom, who had passed recently, apparently was the bill payer in the family, thus I had assumed Dad would pick up where Mom left off. Nope.

I found current bills in Dad's recycling and past due bills in the wastebaskets. It was then I realized it was too late to teach Dad [94] how to pay bills, so I had to take over. Recently we went to the bank where my signature was added as a signer to Dad's checks. Now I do have financial Power of Attorney, but that's not needed yet as Dad was ok with me doing this "job" for him.

As for the shady people, once they learn you are handling all the finance, hopefully they will back off.

Dad has no checks in his home now, I have them all. I also have all the finance 3-ring binders and bank statements. So anyone snooping around won't have a clue what kind of money Dad has. Dad can keep his credit card as he's good with that, plus I pay that credit card bill so I can see if there are any issues. Dad has no ATM card nor a Debit card.
