Franny, your Mom is 90 years old, she is very tired. It is not unusual for someone in her age bracket to take a lot of naps. Even though my parents were still living on their own and doing things themselves, I would always catch them napping morning, noon, and night.

The reason Mom is eating less is because she isn't active any more, thus needs less calories. It just makes sense. Plus as we age we tend to lose our sense of taste, except for sweets.

As for not reading or watching TV, with dementia she probably is having problems with following the story line in both the book and in a TV series. There could also be eye issues happening, not unusual for cataracts or glaucoma. Have her eyes checked by an eye doctor.

Hi, my mother is almost 93 and shares some of the same traits as your mom. I agree with the caregiver's insights above as my mother cat naps all through the day and she is legally blind which takes away her once enjoyment of reading the newspaper every morning. She can not hear very well and I find myself having to raise my voice above the average person's level of speaking. It is frustrating for both of us. How long has your mom lost her appetite? My mom only eats what tastes good to her and she can be very picky. I love her dearly but am trying to find a caregiver support group in my area. If you ever need someone to listen or talk to don't hesitate to email me. God Bless you. I was told by my priest that God would always provide for me since I am doing the Lord's work---helping my mother and allowing her to be with her family during whatever time she has left here. Take care.
